Dharma Productions was established by Yash Johar in 1976 to produce high quality celluliod entertainment that would strive to be accepted and appreciated by audiences across the world. Set up back then under the banner of Dharma Productions Pvt. Ltd., the company soon became a buzzword for stellar productions with releases such as 'Dostana', 'Duniya', 'Muqaddar Ka Faisla', 'Agneepath' and 'Gumrah'.

From there on, Yash Johar formed a proprietorship concern under the name of Dharma Productions in 1997, which raised its level of box-office success even higher with releases like 'Duplicate', 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' and 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham'. |

By 2001, the Dharma Productions Group truly stood amongst India’s leading feature films production companies both in terms of box-office earnings and audience adulation for its movies. From its first film 'Dostana' ('Friendship', 1980) which cast the Indian megastar Amitabh Bachchan (Most Popular Entertainer of the Millennium – BBC) to its latest film 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' ('Laughter and Sadness', 2001) which was written and directed by Karan Johar, the movies of Dharma Productions have established a reputation of showcasing the talents of megastar casts, highly talented writers and technicians, and the promise of providing Wholesome Family Entertainment.
The star line-up of 'Dostana' featured Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha and Zeenat Aman in a passionate story of friendship and betrayal. Following this was 'Duniya', scripted by Javed Akhtar and featuring the music of R D Burman, which showcased the talents of Ashok Kumar and Dilip Kumar along with Rishi Kapoor, Amrita Singh, Amrish Puri, Prem Chopra and Pran.
'Muqaddar Ka Faisla', directed by the highly acclaimed Prakash Mehra, was another Dharma Productions movie which boasted of a stellar starcast with names like Raaj Kumar, Raakhee, Raj Babbar, Tina Munim, Meenakshi Sheshadri and Pran. Subsequent to this movie was 'Agneepath', an Amitabh Bachchan and Mithun Chakravarthy starrer, directed by Mukul Anand with music by Laxmikant Pyarelal and lyrics by Anand Bakshi. The success of this film stood even higher when it won Amitabh Bachchan a National Award for Best Actor. |

Following 'Agneepath' was 'Gumrah', starring Sanjay Dutt and Sridevi and directed by Mahesh Bhatt with music by Laxmikant Pyarelal and lyrics by Anand Bakshi. Dharma Productions then released the first ever double role of the Indian celluloid superstar Shah Rukh Khan in the movie 'Duplicate' which had Juhi Chawla and Sonali Bendre as the leading ladies.
Next came cinematic history from Dharma Productions.
1998 saw the release of Dharma Productions 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' ('Heartbeats'), the directorial debut of Karan Johar that featured the most loved on-screen couple of contemporary Indian cinema, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. This massive production turned into a huge box office blockbuster and became the first Indian feature film to figure in the UK Top 10 (Empire, December 1998), featuring in sold out shows at the Odeon Marble Arch and at The Empire - Leicester Square in the West End of London.

'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' not only broke box-office records but also accumulated a number of National and International awards. Hailed for its superlative performances and excellent craftsmanship 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' is acclaimed for its unparalleled standards in Presentation and Production Mounting even today. All of these landmark achievements set up a huge expectancy and anticipation for the next movie from Dharma Productions, and Yash Johar did not fail to deliver. 2001 saw the release of 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham', ('Laughter and Sadness'), which was scripted and directed by Karan Johar and featured a line-up of Indian megastars across generations. This movie lit up the silver screen with its casting coup of industry stalwarts Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, contemporary megastars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, and current heartthrobs Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor. |

'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' represented everything that was ever expected of a Dharma Productions movie in terms of its grandeur, exquisiteness, and touching storyline that won millions of hearts across the world.
